Assisted Living Transition

Are you looking into moving your senior loved one to an Assisted Living Facility? If so, it will be helpful for you to understand the Reservation and Admission process in an Assisted Living Facility to make the move easier. Before making the Assisted Living Transition, it’s always best to know and compare all the available options based on your loved one’s care needs, preferred location and family’s budget. This will definitely help you make the best assisted living decision for your aging loved one. 


Assisted Living Admission Process

The following is an overview of what takes place during the Reservation and Admission process in an Assisted Living Facility:


1. Scheduling A Tour

Once the family narrows down the search, they will select a few Assisted Living facilities to tour to compare the different senior care services, programs and amenities offered in each facility.  


2. Touring the Facility

The senior or the family member of the potential resident meets the Assisted Living staff and tours the senior care facility. During the Assisted Living tour, seniors and families are welcome to ask any questions regarding senior programs, activities and other Assisted Living services, including fees. Most of the Assisted Living Communities, offer free lunch so that the potential resident can sample their food. If you are interested to go during lunch time, be sure to inform the Assisted Living Director or Manager about this so that they can make arrangements.


3. Selecting the Room

The senior and/or family member will select a private or semi-private room depending on the room availability in the Assisted Living Facility. Usually, the Assisted Living facility will require a deposit to reserve the room. The deposit amount will vary per community so it’s always best to ask about the reserveration/depsosit details during the Assisted Living tour. 


4. Assessment of Care Needs

The Assisted Living staff or nurse will assess the condition of the potential resident to determine the level of care needed. If necessary, the Assisted Living facility’s nurse can go to the senior’s house for an assessment. If for some reasons, the potential senior resident does not meet the criteria of the Assisted Living Facility, the deposit will be refunded. 


5. Submitting the Paperwork 

If the Assisted Living Facility Nurse/Staff determines that the potential resident is a good fit after the assessment, the senior and/or family member will need to complete and submit the admission paper and other necessary documents required by the Assisted Living Facility. Generally, a detailed Physician’s Report with TB testing will be required. In addition, due to the pandemic, a Negative Covid Test result will also be required. 


6. Scheduling the Move-in Date

Shortly after submitting the admission paper and all the required documents, the Assisted Living administrator or staff will contact the potential resident to schedule the move in date and time that work best for the senior and their family.


7. Payment Details and Contract Signing

Once the Senior and their family members agree on a move-in date, the Assisted Living Contract will be given to the family for review and signature. It’s usually signed by the Senior or Senior’s family member (POA). Details regarding community fee, monthly rent payment and other Assisted Living policies will be listed on the Assisted Living Contract. Typically, for Assisted Living communities, there is no annual contract as it is usually a month-to-month basis. Please ensure that you read all the details in the contract. If you have any questions, be sure  to ask the Community Director or Administrator. 


Tip: To make the Assisted Living Transition easier and less stressful for seniors and families, it is always best to involve seniors in the decision making process, if possible.
