Myth #1: Breast Cancer ONLY affects women.

Based on recent research and studies, men do get breast cancer as well. However, the risk is much lower compared to women.

Myth #2: It occurs only in elderly ladies. No need to worry if you’re young.

It’s true that the risk increases as we age. However, keep in mind that no one is too young to get it. Based on recent trends, there has been an increasing amount of younger women in their thirties who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

To help detect breast cancer, it is advisable for women 40 years and older to schedule a yearly breast examination and regular mammograms. On the other hand, younger women, ages 20-40, should have a monthly breast self-examination. Talk to your doctor about this for more information. Remember, early detection is key.

Myth #3: Breast Cancer can be prevented.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. According to the American Cancer Society, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer. However, there are several ways to reduce the risks of cancer and cure it when detected early.

Breast Cancer MythsMyth #5: I have no family history of cancer, so I do not need to worry about it.

It is true that family history is important, however you have to remember that there are several more risk factors involved. Even though no one in your family has had breast cancer, you can still be at risk. It is advisable to schedule your regular physical check-up and yearly mammography test.

Myth #7 Antiperspirants/deodorant and Birth Control pills can cause breast cancer.

This is not true. In fact, scientific studies have not linked deodorants and birth control pills to cancer.

Myth #8: Underwire bras can cause breast cancer.

This is inaccurate. There is no scientific evidence to prove this claim. Therefore, bras do not affect your risk for cancer.

Myth #9: Herbal medicines and dietary supplements can treat breast cancer.

This has not been proven scientifically. Instead, it will be best to talk to your physician about the different breast cancer treatment options available.

Myth #10: Breast cancer is fatal.

This is not true. With the recent breakthroughs in cancer treatment, breast cancer is accurately detected and can be treated when diagnosed at an early stage. However, it can be fatal if it spreads to other parts of the body, especially if it gets into the blood or bones. Talk to your doctor for more information.
