What are Medical Alert Systems?

Medical Alert Systems allows individuals to have protection in the comfort of their own home. They are electronic devices designed to send a signal to an Emergency Response Center at the push of a button. An emergency response personnel will then determine the severity of the situation and if first emergency responders need to be sent to the location.

Who Uses These Devices?

These devices are typically used by individuals 65 and over and persons with disabilities. Some individuals may live with family but still want piece of mind that they will be immediately attended to in an emergency situation.

In certain scenarios, falls can occur when least expected. They can happen in the middle of the night, outside in the garden or even inside the bathroom. In many instances, most individuals do not carry their cells phones with them and loved ones are not around or are asleep when they are desperately needed.

The CDC and Prevention states that the Number #1 cause of Deaths in America ages 65 are due to falls.1 In fact, fall victims are found on an average of 8-32 hours helpless on the floor from when the incident occurs.2 If not fatal, an average of 3 million Americans are admitted annually to the hospital and rehab for treatment from falls.3

What Equipment is Typically Included?

Medical Alert Systems come with a main unit (transmitter) and neck or wrist pendant that sends a signal to the Emergency Response Center. Some units such as the Electronic Caregiver Premier offer an “Automatic Fall Pendant” that sends a signal automatically to the transmitter should the individual have a fall.

The Automatic Fall Pendant is typically worn on the neck and emits a signal if the pendant’s shock sensor is triggered. This can be very useful if the individual has a fall and is dazed or unconscious and unable to manually press their pendant. It should be noted, however, that Automatic Fall Pendants do not detect 100% of falls.4

What Features Come with a Medical Alert System?

Common features that usually come with these systems are GPS location tracking, Cellular Service and Automatic Fall Detection.

How Much Do Medical Alert Systems Cost?

Typical medical alert systems will typically cost $29.99 to $49.99 per month. Most systems do not require contracts, equipment fees or cancellation fees.
