HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center (4.2*) is in 1313 Hermann Drive and in the heart of the Houston Museum District.  It has served the community since 1975 and is part of one of the largest healthcare systems in the city.  The hospital has an 18 bed emergency room open 24/7, 2 ICU units both surgical ICU and medical ICU. Its mission is commitment of meeting the growing health needs and expectations of the Greater Houston area.

Altus Houston Hospital (4.6*) – is at 6011 W. Sam Houston Parkways. Its services include surgery, imaging center, pain management, emergency room. Altus has a 31,500 sq. ft. facility with three ER beds. It has recently acquired six Neighbors emergency center locations and its single goal is to deliver affordable and quality health care. 

St. Joseph Medical Center (4.0*) is in 1401 St. Joseph Parkway and is the first and only downtown hospital. It has over 500 board certified physicians on staff with around the clock staff available. SJMC has provided healthcare services to Greater Houston residents for over 130 years in partnership with physician owners. 

Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest and Acute Rehab Unit (4.4*) is located at 11297 Fallbrook Drive. It is a 96 bed hospital treating chronically and critically ill patients, has 84 long term acute care beds,  12 bed ICU and 5 negative pressure rooms.

Local Transportation

Getting around Houston and the Greater Houston area is doable for seniors and disabled passengers.  There is the Harris County Transit and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County.

The Harris County Transit (4.2*) has an office at 15734 Aldine Westfield Road. It offers 1) ADA Paratransit Services for the disabled; 2) RIDES - for eligible senior residents and 3) Non-emergency medical transport available by appointment. The Harris County Transit RIDES (3.4*) is at 8410 Lantern Point Drive. It provides seniors specialized transport to meet their doctors appointments, do grocery shopping or otherwise just get around. RIDES is a curb-to-curb subsidized program, i.e. one purchases transportation service at a significant discount – at 50% discount of the total trip cost. There are two ways of participating in the program:  the first, Shared Ride with other passengers requires advance reservation (at least 24 hours) and is the most economical based on mileage distance; second, a Taxi Service, same day service, can be booked 90 minutes in advance.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (3.8*) METRO is at 1900 Main Street. Seniors purchase the METRO Q Fare Card or Day Pass at a discount and they can ride the local bus, Park and Ride bus, Metro rail, Metro Rapid and Metro Curb-to-Curb. Eligible seniors are required to confirm age.

Senior Rides and More (4.5*) is at 9600 S. Gessner Road. It is faith based nonprofit whose mission is to promote senior independent living, health and safety by providing free transportation and other services.  It is a network of volunteers for seniors who live in the southwest and northwest Houston area. 

If your loved one needs to go to a doctors appointment or some other activity transportation will be available.  Please remember that a community or residential care home can usually accommodate your loved one with  transportation in the Greater Houston area.  Some facilities include transport services in their info  package and some require additional fees.  Just remember to inquire first from the care home staff before you decide to arrange transportation.

Senior Community Centers

Aside from the privately run senior centers in Houston, the majority of the senior community centers fall under the jurisdiction of the Houston Parks and Recreation, Houston Health Department with the Harris County Area Agency on Aging. It is advisable to check the monthly activity calendar for time changes.

Houston Parks and Recreation – operate 60 community centers in the city.  

The Senior Program offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities at select citywide community centers. Activities include performing and virtual arts, exercise and physical activities, senior computer classes. The centers are grouped in four areas:

Northwest Area: Lincoln Community Center at 979 Grenshaw. Some of the senior activities are the Book Club (9am-10am), senior chair exercise (10-11am) and a chair volleyball.

Northeast Area:

History and Population

The Galleria (4.5*) at 5085 Westheimer Road. It is a huge complex of high end stores, ice skating and dining called the “gem of the city”, iconic landmark and world class shopping mall. One can sit and watch the ice skaters or try various cuisines since there is plenty of food options from cafes to five star restaurants. There are 400 stores from high end to budget friendly. 

River Oaks Shopping Center (4.4*) is at 1964 W. Gray St. It is a sizable plaza with eateries, apparel stores, kitchen goods, arts and spa. The layout is easy to navigate with a large variety of restaurants and affordable stores such as Kroger, TJ Maxx, Barnes & Noble.

Uptown Park (4.5*) in 1121 Uptown Park Blvd. is a high-end outdoor shopping center offering upscale boutiques, restaurants, wine bars and cafes. It is a nice mall to have a casual meal with the family, a great place for lunch or brunch with a relaxing atmosphere and picture-perfect patio. It has a nice mix of restaurants and retail shops.

City Center (4.6*) is in 800 Town and County Blvd. It is described as a contemporary shopping compound featuring brand-name stores, restaurants and live music.  In the plaza there is an impressive selection of healthy foods and the views are beautiful and pleasant. It could be a wonderful experience for a senior to try an authentic brick oven New York pizza, home made ice cream and have fun to listen to live music.

Memorial City Mall (4.5*) is located at 303 Memorial City Way. It is a large shopping complex with a huge food court, a variety of things to do for the entire family with anchor shops such as Macy, Banana Republic, Apple store, etc. a movie theater, restaurants, ice skating and a carousel. There is plenty of little resting areas when one is tired walking.  

Willowbrook Mall (4.3*) is at 2000 Willowbrook Mall.  It is an airy indoor shopping plaza with department stores, retail clothing, footwear, accessories, a playground for children and food court. It is said that it has one of the best food courts with a choice of ethnic foods –gyros, Italian, SE Asian. The stores carry the basic essentials and variety of goods. The mall is modern, easy access, plenty of sitting areas and handicapped parking.
