Cost of Care

Pennsylvania’s Cost for Assisted Living is $3,175 per month on average. Throughout the entire state, care can start anywhere as low as $1,000 and go as high as $7,800 per month. This range in cost will be influenced by a variety of factors including the resident’s care needs and preferences (source: Genworth Financial).

Paying for Care

Pennsylvania’s Assisted Living costs are typically paid by the Senior or their families “out of pocket.” Contrary to popular belief, Medicare and Medicaid do not cover the costs of assisted living care.

The programs that are available to help Pennsylvania residents pay for care are 1) Long Term Care Insurance and 2) Veteran’s Aid and Attendance Programs. These two programs cover a portion of the Senior Living Cost. In addition, the VA Aid and Attendance may also cover the cost of care for the war veteran’s spouse.

In order to qualify for either program, each individual will have to meet certain guidelines and requirements. Please ensure to check with any of Pennsylvania’s Veteran’s Administration offices for more details.

Cost Factors

Prior to selecting a senior living community or care home in Pennsylvania, the admissions staff will perform an assessment to determine the condition and care needs of your elderly loved one. This care assessment will be a key factor in determining the monthly cost of care.

Other factors that influence the monthly cost of rent and care fees will be the size and location of the care facility, private or shared room, private or shared bathroom, number of years the facility has been in business, staff experience, transportation to and from the doctor, and other amenities and services.

Provided Services

Assisted Living Facilities in Pennsylvania provide 24-hour care and supervision to residents who need assistance, but do not require medical nursing care around the clock. This type of senior housing can range in size from six beds or less to over one hundred beds and offer care to residents 60 years or older.

Senior living facilities provide their residents assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, social activities, housekeeping, meals, and transportation. Inspections by Pennsylvania state officials, staff training, and certification requirement, family and community involvement, and ongoing quality assurance efforts work together to ensure quality care in these care facilities.

These Assisted Living Facilities promote maximum independence and dignity for each resident and also encourages family and community involvement when possible. They range in services depending on the care needs, price, size, and amenities offered in the care facility. Having these different options are a benefit for residents so they can be in a care home that is right for them.
