Cost of Care

Ohio’s Cost for Assisted Living is $3,920 per month on average. Throughout the entire state, elderly care can start anywhere as low as $1,980 and go as high as $7,770 per month. This range in cost will be influenced by a variety of factors including the senior’s care needs and preferences (source: Genworth Financial).

Paying for Care

Ohio’s Assisted Living costs are typically paid by the resident needing care or their families “out of pocket.” Contrary to popular belief, Medicare and Medicaid unfortunately do not cover the costs of assisted living.

The programs that are available to help Ohio’s senior population pay for care are 1) Long Term Care Insurance and 2) Veteran’s Aid and Attendance Programs. These two programs cover a portion of the monthly cost of care. In addition, the VA Aid and Attendance may also cover the care expenses for the war veteran’s spouse as well.

In order to qualify for either program, each resident will have to meet certain guidelines and requirements. Please ensure to check with any of Veteran’s Administration offices located in Ohio for more details.

Cost Factors

Prior to selecting a senior living facility in Ohio, the admissions staff will perform an assessment of the resident to determine their condition and care needs. This resident assessment will be a key factor in determining the monthly cost of care.

Other factors that influence the monthly cost of rent and elder care fees will be the size and location of the senior living facility, private or shared room, private or shared bathroom, number of years the facility has been in business, staff experience, transportation to and from the doctor, and other amenities and services.

Provided Services

Assisted Living Facilities in Ohio provide 24-hour care and supervision to seniors who need assistance, but do not require medical nursing care around the clock. This type of senior housing can range in size from six beds or less to over one hundred beds and offer care to seniors 60 years or older.

Senior living facilities provide their residents assistance with activities of daily living, medication management, social activities, housekeeping, meals, and transportation. Inspections by Ohio state officials, staff training, and certification requirement, family and community involvement, and ongoing quality assurance efforts work together to ensure quality care in these care facilities.

These Assisted Living Facilities promote maximum independence and dignity for residents and also encourages family and community involvement when possible. They range in services depending on the care needs, price, size, and amenities offered in the care home or facility. Having these different options are a benefit for seniors so they can be in a facility that is the right fit for their needs.

Assisted Living Facilities in Ohio are also referred to locally as Residential Care Facilities (RCFs). These care homes and communities are regulated by Ohio’s Department of Health Division of Quality Assurance, Bureau of Long Term care. This department is in charge of licensing, inspecting and monitoring all activities that occur in the long-term living facility.

The Department of Health Division of Quality Assurance in Ohio regulates the operation and provision of service in these Residential Care Facilities settings including other items such as acceptance criteria, admission requirements, staff training, criminal background checks, medication management, food service, dementia care, administrator qualifications, disaster planning, and resident rights.
