Our Evaluation of Assisted Living in Sacramento, CA

(Our Rating = 5 Stars)

Having excellent year, round weather and over 170 assisted living facilities, Sacramento is a desirable city that can meet the needs of your loved one. The city has a wide range of small, residential board and care homes as well as a good number of large assisted living communities. Either of these assisted living facilities are great for Seniors that want to live independently but may require some daily assistance with showering, toiletry, bathing, dressing or having their meals prepared. Depending on your loved one’s needs, there are good number of care options that can fit within the family’s budget.

Also known as the California’s State Capital, Sacramento ranks in the top 3 out of 50 Cities for the best Park Systems in the U.S. The park system boasts over 5,000 acres of land which is great for your loved one to get exercise or enjoy a picnic with the family. Should your loved one prefer more social interaction, a large retirement home or a routine visit to the local Senior Center may do the trick.

Local Safety and Crime
When it comes to safety in Sacramento, the city does not have the highest safety ratings. However, this is what you come to expect when you live in a major metropolitan city in the U.S. Sacramento is rated 9.6% safer than all cities across the U.S. and 4.0% safer than all the cities in California (source: Area Vibes).

There are always good areas and areas you should avoid. It’s always good to ask the facility and the local authorities on what places you should avoid.

City Weather
The weather in Sacramento averages 91 degrees in the summer (60 degrees at night) and 56 degrees in the winter (42 degrees at night). Also known as a “Mediterranean Climate,” this is ideal weather for seniors since it allows them to comfortably enjoy outdoor exercise and activities. Types of Senior Housing
In Sacramento, the typical Assisted Living facilities are small residential care homes (also known as Board and Care Homes) that have 6 residents in the facility and large communities that have anywhere from 30 to 200 residents. They are non-medical facilities for those residents not requiring 24-hour medical supervision. Doctors and nurses are typically on call, but caregivers are always present 24 hours a day.

The smaller care facilities offer a “home-like” setting with a 1:3 caregiver-to-ratio. They also provide services such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medications assistance, activities and transportation to the doctor.

If you’re loved one is active and prefers frequent, daily activities and plenty of social interaction with other residents, a large community such as Brookdale, Sunrise, Emeritus, and Atria Senior Living may be a better fit. Also, if you’re loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease and has the tendency to wander, the large communities also provide a secure wing to keep their residents safe.

Local Assisted Living Costs
Care in Sacramento for assisted living averages about $3,350 per month. Whether you have a limited budget or want high-end care for your loved one, costs in Sacramento can start at $1,300 per month and go as high as $7,380 (source: Genworth 2013).

Cost Factors
Your loved one’s cost of care will depend on their condition and care needs. Other factors in the monthly cost will be based on location, appearance of the facility, staff experience, private or shared room, amenities and services provided.

Paying for Assisted Living
Assisted Living is typically paid by the resident or the family out of pocket (or private pay). Contrary to what most hear, Medicare and Medicaid do not cover the cost of care. However, long term care insurance or Veteran’s Aid and Attendance can help pay for assisted living. If your loved one is ineligible for these programs, you may contact the Department of Social Services to inquire about senior housing programs in your area.

Nearby Hospitals
Whether your love one needs their routine checkup or has an emergency, Sacramento has some of the top hospitals in the country to meet the needs of your loved one. According to US News and World Report, Sacramento has some of the top hospitals in the country including UC Davis Medical Center (Metro Rank #1), Kaiser Permanente Sacramento (Metro Rank #2), and Mercy General Hospital (Metro Rank #2).

Transportation
Sacramento Regional Transit District (SACRT) can help your loved one get around the city and assist with their transportation needs. Seniors can take the standard transit line with buses or light rail vehicles that are also equipped for wheelchair access. Should they prefer a “curb-to-curb” service, “City Ride” is available in the city of Citrus Heights. This shuttle service can bring their passenger to any destination within the boundaries of Citrus Heights and Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael. This includes Roseville’s Kaiser Medical Offices.

Remember that most assisted living facilities will offer transportation services for their residents. Some facilities will charge a fee, but they will be able to drive and accompany your loved one to doctor’s appointments, mass service and other needs. Before deciding on an assisted living facility for your loved one, make sure to check with management staff for the details.

Senior Community Center
If your loved one is still active and requires daily activities and social interaction, a large assisted living community might be a fit. However, they can also reside in a small residential care home and make daily trips to the local community senior center.

The primary senior center in Sacramento is the Hart Senior Center which is located at 915 27th St., Sacramento, CA 95816. Your loved one will enjoy the company of other seniors and as well as the services the center offers. From arts and crafts, card games and hobbies, education, exercise and wellness, music and dance, social gatherings, special events, volunteering and writing and language learning, the fun never stops and all attendees are ensured to have a great time.

Local Shopping & Dining
If you want to take your loved one out for the day, you’ll definitely have a lot of shopping and dining options throughout the city. Sacramento offers a wide range of food and shopping such as Old Sacramento with a historic feel, Antique Plaza in Rancho Cordova that offers a unique variety of antique and vintage items, Folsom Premium Outlets, Country Club Plaza Mall, Sunrise Mall in Citrus heights and Westfield Shopping Town in Downtown Plaza.

With all of these options, you surely can pack in a fun day with your loved one and get some exercise and sun as well.

Activities for Seniors
Sacramento continually ranks in the top ten sunniest cities within the United States and offers seniors many opportunities for recreational and historical enjoyment. Some of the city’s great spots for Seniors and families are:
